World Trade Center Memorial:
Design Competition

New York, New York

For this competition, each victim is memorialized by a 2’ diameter by 18” tall cast glass bell. The dark glass will appear during the day as solid, dark obsidian as if left behind by some geologic event, but night will reveal a glow emanating from within the glass. Each of the bells will have computer controlled mallet concealed inside which will rub the inside of rim causing it to resonate like a wine glass.

Each year, at 8:13 a.m. on September 11th, the moment when flight 11 was hijacked, the 87 bells of the passengers and crew will begin ringing. At 8:42 a.m., 60 more bells for those aboard flight 175 will begin to ring. By 9:38 a.m. when the Pentagon was hit and flight 83 had been hijacked, nearly 3000 bells in the sunken courtyard will be ringing, a sound that is as indelible as those images in our minds. At 9:50 a.m., at the moment when the South Tower collapsed, the reflecting pool in the footprint of the south tower will suddenly overflow, flooding much of the plaza and silencing many of the bells. At 10:30 a.m. the reflecting pool of the north tower will overflow silencing the remaining bells and completely flooding the plaza in silence and mirroring the sky above.
