Tainan Metropolitan Yancheng District: Ecological Urban Redevelopment of Zone 1-5
Following the 2015 government initiative to expand the Tainan metropolitan area, the historic Yancheng District was chosen as one of several districts by the Urban Planning Bureau to undergo redevelopment that also satisfies a recent push to achieve more sustainable and walk-able communities.
The masterplan divides Yancheng District into five development zone with a unifying approach of making each district pedestrian accessible with seamless connections to urban plazas and green spaces that will populate the district.
The existing farm ponds and the topography that they leave behind were the main impetus for the landscape masterplan, the community parks, and how water is collected, cleaned, and managed on-site. The existing drainage system that runs east-west through the district was transformed into a linear park and the drainage ‘fingers’ that extend from it were used to create urban plaza focal points, and streetscape waterways that thread the calming influence of water throughout the district.
