The Sun Island Master Plan deals with a multitude of environmental and development issues that surround the Island. Attention was given not only to the program of the Island itself, but also contextual issues dealing with the flooding and erosion of the Songhua River. Working with an existing masterplan for the city of Harbin, an approach was developed that deals with each of these concerns, while giving the District a unifying character.
The approach for the entire River Basin was the implementation of Wetland Platforms. These platforms serve as terraces that provide proper conditions for wetland plantings to help mitigate erosion. The established plants would also reduce wind erosion that is prevalent in the area. The platforms can serve as park space, areas for bird habitat, education and research, and as a transition between the built and natural environments.
