Ching-Shin Elementary School: Roof Garden and Façade Renovation
Sandwiched between two new classroom buildings, the roof garden atop the original school building at Ching-Shin Elementary and Middle School is conceived as a visual bridge which connects the new with the old, creating continuity across all of the campus buildings. The roof garden is principally designed as a highly dynamic and graphic landscape composition. The bending pathway evokes a piece of folded paper which is laid across a rich, colorful garden.
Working in close collaboration with a structural engineer, an innovative solution for dealing with the weight and load issues was created by utilizing a customized cross-beam system to lift the entire garden off of the existing degraded roof structure.
The façade of the original school building, built in 1967, had gone under various modifications and was in general disrepair. The restoration sought to bring the school back to its original state which included the sourcing of the original split-face brick. Exposed aggregate columns thoughtfully complement the brick.
